Hana Kim works with various surfaces to create two dimensional as well as three dimensional bodies of works. Kim studied fine arts at Han Yang Women's University in Seoul and became passionate about Batik painting while pursuing her degree. She continued to extend the boundary of traditional techniques in Batik painting and reinforce the materiality further. There are two major series she has been working with: nature series and abstraction series. The nature series is inspired by her childhood memories which come from her hometown located in the rural area. The abstraction series is an experiment of shifting the materiality often considered as craft – which forms everyday object made with cotton and silk – into a modernist body of works.
